Hometown Heroes

Town of Poughkeepsie honors those who have served our country.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of press.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the poet,, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, not the politician, who has given us the right to vote.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, who salutes the flag.

It is the SOLDIER or VETERAN, who serves under the flag,

God Bless America!

In 2019, the Town of Poughkeepsie launched our very own “Hometown Heroes” project. The mission of the Hometown Heroes Project is to place banners honoring veterans, either living or dead, who have served in any branch of the United States Armed Forces. Whether in times of war or peace, veterans and their families devote their lives to the service of our country and the ideals we hold dear. The sacrifices they make are without parallel: In times of war, veterans put their lives on the line to protect our freedoms, many of whom have paid the ultimate sacrifice.

The Hometown Heroes project allows local families to honor their loved ones by sponsoring a banner to be displayed on the utility poles throughout our community. In November 2019, the Town of Poughkeepsie displayed the first round of banners around the War Memorial on Raymond Avenue. Below you will see the honorary Veterans for the Town of Poughkeepsie “Hometown Heroes” project.

Currently, the cost of each banner is $140.00 and the cost of the hardware for the utility poles is $100.00. The banners are 2 ft. by 3ft. double-sided print. Currently, family members cover the full cost of the banner ($240.00). The Town of Poughkeepsie’s goal is to be able to cover the cost of the hardware with your help. Also, in the event that an application has been submitted for a local veteran and the cost of the banner cannot be afforded, the hope is that donations from our local business partners could also cover the cost of the banner. Donations of any size are greatly appreciated.

If your business would like to sponsor the cost of a banner, your business name will be proudly printed on the banner for our community to see. As you can see, the banners above display "Arlington American Legion Post 1302" as the proud sponsors of our honorary veterans.

The Town of Poughkeepsie and the Hometown Heroes Project cannot thank you enough for your support of this incredible program. As stated above, donations of any size are greatly appreciated. If you or your organization would like to make a donation or sponsor the cost of a banner, please fill out the attached form and make your donations out to the Town of Poughkeepsie.

Sincerely,
Jon Jay Baisley
