Subject: Proposed Development at Psych Center
Just wanted to weigh in on the proposed development at the former Hudson River Psych Center. We are thrilled that this dilapidated area will be brought back to something useful. Our major concern is the Fairview Fire District being able to service the proposed development. Right now, taxpayers are paying the highest fire tax in NYS and probably the nation. We personally are paying $2000 in fire tax per year for a condo. The problem is that there are so many Not For Profits in the 5 mile area of the Fairview Fire District Territory-that don't pay taxes. We are paying their bill!! Sadly-more than 50% of Fairview services are being used by the Not For Profits. We are working to get the Not For Profits to pay their fair share-not in every district-but in districts where >30% of the territory is Not For Profits. This process is glacierly slow but we are staying the course to hopefully move some sort of legislation forward and give us some relief. There is doubt that this will ever happen-but we are desperate for relief.
Now that you know some of the history-some of the concern is around the antiquated Fairview Fire District, with already undersized equipment and undersized facilities taking on more responsibility. It will not work and who will pay for their upgrades to be able to serve the new development? F F F F, now nowthatthat
Fairview Fire is too small and outdated. Now they are faced with serving the bigger than ever Marist campus, another apartment development going in and now this project. They simply cannot handle this. Maybe the Town should look to consolidate Fariview with Arlington/Hyde Park/City of Poughkeepsie Districts. That would be a start.
We are looking for the Town of Poughkeepsie to make certain enough money is collected to be sure Fairview can serve this development or look for a remedy to fix the already stressed and out of balance situation.
